You might wonder what that is all about. When I first began to paint it was a magical experience or maybe it would be better to say that it was a spiritual experience. I had never painted before but when I put brush to paper it just came. There were moments when it felt like there was someone inside me moving the brush making all these wonderful things happen. I was in awe of the things that I could make and got a lot of comments from other people as well. I was amazed and I truly felt like God had blessed me with something special. But knowing that I was a little worried. I decided very quickly that I needed to be careful or pride would be my undoing. It is far from my nature to be prideful but I saw it would be very easy for me to fall into that trap. So, I decided right then that every time I signed a painting I would add the initials GtG, Glory to God, to remind myself that I had been blessed by God. The talent was a gift from him and in using that talent to create I needed to give the glory to Him and Him alone. I still feel that way and strive to honor Him with my art. I want above all for Him to use the things I create to touch and bless the lives of those around me. I am filled with gratitude for the things that God has blessed me with. Value and contrast. The remarkable thing in this life is that everything that we enjoy or find pleasurable is because we view it against its opposite. Sweet is sweet because we know what bitter, sour or bland is. We know comfort because we have been uncomfortable. Art works the same way. It's all the contrasts that we see. The most important contrast and the one at the foundation of that is the contrast of value. Darks and lights explain the world around us. And when used correctly they grab our viewer attention and make them stop and look. The easiest most effective way to do this is to place your darkest dark next to your lightest light. Your viewer’s eye will be immediately drawn to that bit of contrast. You will be in essence telling your viewer what the subject of the image is. In this image, the viewer's eye is drawn to the starling’s face because it is the darkest thing in the paining and it’s set against a very light background. Once I’ve gotten your attention the expression on it’s face tells the story… “what a grumpy little bird.” It's all about controlling the values in your image.
